Kopcheve (Yiddish) Kopciowo (Polish)

Slownik Geograficzny Krolestwa Polskiego( Georgraphical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and other slavonic countries) was written between 1880 and 1902 and consists of 17 volumes. A digital edition is available from The Polish Genealogical Society of America. The following is a translation of entries relating to Kopciowo and nearby villages. The Kopciowo entry was written in 1883. (powiat = county, gmina = rural district)

These small villages were ‘owned’ by different manor farms during the time period and may be listed under more than one location.

KOPCIOWO (Vol 4 p 376)

The chief village of Hancza-biala, in powiat Sejny, Kopciowo is also a rural administrative district composed of several villages as well as a parish. The town is 26 versts (apx 26 km) from Sejny and 56 versts from Suwalki. There is a wooden church and post office and it is on the main road from Sejny to Grodno. There is also a shelter for elderly women and disabled people. In the year 1827, there were 30 houses and 176 residents. At present (1883), there are 86 houses and 925 residents. There is an iron factory which employs 16 workers and produces 26000 ra (silver rubles)

In past times it was the property of the Kopciow family. Mikloaj z Kozielska Oginski, husband of Katarzyna Kopciowna inherited this village and laid the foundations of the wooden church in the year 1729. Bishop Massalski of Wilno, who retained the patronage of the parish, bestowed it as a legacy on the beneficiary of Wiesiejie. After Massalski, the village became the possession of Baron Zygniew, followed by Colonel Tyszkiewsicz, Sztecutyn, and Ablamowicz. Formerly Kopciowo was part of the great private manor Justanyowo.

The Parish of Kopciowo, deanery Sejny, previously Lozdiejie, had 4156 souls.

In the town cemetary one finds the grave of the great Emilii Plater who died 23 December 1831.

The rural district of Kopciowo has 4301 inhabitants and an area of 29,996 morgs. It belongs to Community Court District no. IV Wiesieje which is 11 versts from Kopciowo. The gmina includes:

The following are extracts from the SGP relative to the above listed villages: DUMBLANCE (Vol 2 p 219) is a village in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny County. It is located 28 versts from Sejny and has 6 houses and 86 residents.

GIERDASZE (Vol 2 p 559) is a village in the parish of Lejpuny, rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny County. It is located 43 versts from the town of Sejny. In 1827 there were 10 houses with 76 residents. Now there are 19 houses and 190 residents.

GULBIENISZKI or GURBIENISZKI (Vol 2 p 907) is in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny County. It is located 32 versts from the town of Sejny and has 3 houses and 20 residents.

ILGIENKI (Vol 3, p 258) is a manorial farmstead in the parish of Wiesiejie, rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny County and located 25 versts from the town of Sejny. It was the property of Ablamowitz. There are 2 houses and 11 inhabitants. The manorial farmstead includes Juszkance, Dublance and the settlement of Przejma and is 7 versts from Kopciowo. The land area is 1206 morgs of which 263 are arable, 51 meadowland, 49 mg pasture, 203 mg woodland, and 40 mg barren land. There are 10 timber buildings, a pitch and peat bed. MICHALISZKI (Vol 6, p 296, 3) is a village in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny county, 24 versts from the town of Sejny. In 1827, there were 7 houses and 43 residents. It was part of the Justyanowo estate. Now there are 9 houses and 92 residents.

MOCEWICZE (Vol 6 p 557) village and manorial farmstead near the Hancza river in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny county. It is 32 versts from the town of Sejny. In 1827, there were 12 houses and 70 residents. Now there are 13 houses and 98 inhabitants in the village and 2 houses and 10 inhabitants at the farmstead. SZATKANCY(Vol 11 p 808) is a village in the parish of Lejpuny, rural district Kopciowo, Sejny County. It is 33 versts from Sejny with 9 houses and 94 inhabitants. In 1827, there were 5 houses and 57 inhabitants and it was in the parish of Sereje.

USTRONIE (Vol 12 p848 11) a manorial farmstead near the river Marycha in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny county. It is 21 versts from Sejny . There is one house and 6 inhabitants. The farmstead was until 1871 part of the manor of Holny Wolmera, with lands of 4267 morgs of which 1162 were arable, meadows 50 morgs, pasture 551 morgs, woodland 2489 morg ; coppice 4 morgs and barren 4 morgs. There were 4 wooden buildings,a tree nursery and peat deposits.

WALENTE (Vol 12 p 906) or Walencie, also known as Niekrzyce or Niekryzysze. A small village in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny county which is located 28 versts from the town of Sejny. There are 11 houses and 106 inhabitants. In 1827, it was the government village Niekszyse in the parish of Sereje with 6 houses and 43 inhabitants.

WOJNIUNCE (vol 13 p 756) is a village on the lake of the same name in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny county. It is 29 versts from the town of Sejny and has 20 houses and 151 inhabitants. In 1827, there were 6 houses and 55 inhabitants. The lake Wojniunce flows to the lake Bagarys.

WOJSZNARY(Vol 13 p 763) a settlement in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny county. It is 34 versts from the town of Sejny and consists of 1 house and 8 inhabitants.

JUSTYANOW (Vol 3 p 640)

Justyanow is a large manorial farmstead in the parish and rural district of Kopciowo, Sejny county. It is located 37 versts from Sejny with 3 houses and 72 inhabitants. The estate belonged for a time to the Massalskis but is today in the possession of the Ablamowicz family. It has a great beautiful lake, Hanza and the estate includes the following:

Justyanow, Jozefowo, Helenowo with Gulbrieniszki, the surroundings of Wysmaly, the factory settlement Kopciowo, environs Pohulanka with Miciuny (villages mentioned above) The area measures 8105 morgs;
